Difference between internal & external threads?
What is the difference between internally threaded and externally threaded piercings?
The easiest way to think about is this:
Internally threaded piercings = the ball screws INTO the bar. (see labret image below)

Exteranlly threaded piercings = the ball screws ON TO the bar. (see horseshoe image below)

Internally & externally threaded always refers to the barbell or labret post etc… and not the attachment. If the bar its self is internally threaded meaning the bar contains screw threads inside the barbell, because of this the attachment ball or cone will have a threaded post protruding from the base so the attachment can screw in. The opposite is true of external thread, the bar will contain thread on the outside (externally) and will screw into the attachment.
Thread sizes on externally threaded piercings are generally the same (i.e. the thread size will match the bar thickness) however thread sizes for internally threaded bars/attachments are slightly different:
1.2mm (16g) bar thicknes = 0.9mm attachment post thickness
1.6mm (14g) bar thickness = 1.2mm attachment post thickness
